I have to say that I couldn't remember every single line word for word but I feel better as I person for taking the time to think about helping someone else besides myself. That's a good feeling. The personal reward that you get from helping someone in need of something is awesome. Thinking about helping people is something that I think I need to work on more. Then actually helping people is the next step.
I found out that the area that I think I need to work on more is worldly flourishing. I don't think that I volunteer or help out with community activities or fundraisers much at all. So I think I'm going to talk to our fundraising committee at work and volunteer my time for the next fundraiser we have. I hate to admit it but sometimes I go out of my way to not volunteer to help with something. Everyone needs help at some point or another so why not just help out once in a while?
I had the same issue with remembering it word for word. When I first started I figured I wouldn’t have to keep looking down at the book every so often to re-read them but yep, I sure did. And that’s not a big deal but it’s interesting that I have a hard time remembering 4 lines after repeating them for 10 minutes!
ReplyDeleteYour idea to help volunteer in your community is awesome. I admit that I try to steer clear of volunteering sometimes too. I know it sounds awful but here in a military town I tend to keep to myself and do my own thing. I know our Family Readiness Officer, who keeps the families in touch with any kind of plans, is always looking for volunteers. I should contact her and see if she needs any extra help because you are right that when you help people out you feel better. And moving from Minnesota to North Carolina was a total culture shock! It would have been nice to have a few extra phone calls or people willing to help answer questions. Maybe I will seriously think about looking into this!
It will take time for this kind of action to take place with little thought. Any time I volunteer, something seems to come up that my family planned and I can not spend the time with my family. Then I do not enjoy the volunteering as much because I do not get to see my family very often. I think you have very good intentions. Keep it up.
ReplyDeleteMelissa,
ReplyDeleteRemembering the lines was challenging, but when reading the directions for the assessment Dacher states “close your eyes and let’s try this together” (2006). I could not help but think about reading the next sentence, and just laughed.
The giving one’s time to others, while volunteering is a selfless act of kindness. I too need to improve the amount of time offered for others, but also feel the need to take care of my family first. One thought I have is to have them volunteer as well. This can only help more people and “causes” while spending quality time with family. Thanks for sharing.
Melissa,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the decision that you have made about dedicating some time to serving your community. This class has really made an impact. I took on a project recently that I was not even planning to do. I have been feeding breakfast to some homeless people at the park. I do not get a chance to go everyday, but I try to go as often as possible. This project really gives me a good feeling although it is not really about me. It is just nice to make a difference in another person's life by showing loving-kindness.
